Retail store music: the features that matter (and why your own sound wins)

Retail store music: the features that matter (and why your own sound wins)

Walk into a store you love and listen. Before you touch a single thing, the room has already told you who it is. The music did a lot of that work.

Most stores treat music as a utility: something to switch on at opening and forget. The best stores treat it like the lighting, the shelving and the scent. It is part of the brand, and it deserves the same care.

This guide covers the features that matter when you pick a music service for a store. Then it covers two things most guides skip: why your store should sound like itself, and how to stop paying royalties on music that was never yours.

The features that matter

A good store music service does five things well. Everything else is a nice extra.

1. Music you are allowed to play

Your personal Spotify or Apple Music account is for personal use. Their terms do not allow playback in a business. A store needs music that is cleared for public play. Ask every provider one plain question: who owns this music, and what else do I have to pay to play it? We come back to that question below.

2. Music chosen for the room

A random hits list makes your store sound like every other store. You want music picked for a mood and a moment: a slow morning, a busy Saturday, a quiet close. At Tonada we call these collections vibes. Each vibe holds one clear mood, energy and style, so the room stays consistent from one track to the next.

3. Scheduling through the day

Your store is not the same place at 10:00 and at 18:00. The music should change with it. Calm and warm while the first customers browse. More lift when the floor is full. Softer again near closing. Set a week of time slots once, and the music follows the day without anyone touching a button.

4. Zones

The entrance, the sales floor and the fitting rooms can each want something different. A café with a patio, or a salon with a treatment room, has the same need. Zones let each area play its own vibe on its own schedule, from one account.

5. Control you can trust

You have a store to run. You need to see, at a glance, what plays in each zone and whether it is fine. If a device goes quiet, you want a plain message, not an error code. And if you run more than one location, you want to manage all of them from one place, on your laptop or your phone.

Sound like yourself

Here is the problem with most store music. It comes from the same charts and the same editorial playlists. So the boutique on your street, the chain store at the mall and the café across the road can all play the same song in the same hour. Your logo is yours. Your interior is yours. Your sound is rented, and everyone else rents it too.

A store with its own sound is easy to remember. Customers cannot hear that track anywhere else, so the music belongs to the place. It works like a signature scent: nobody notices it on purpose, but they feel it when they come back.

There are two ways to get there with Tonada:

  • Pick from our catalog. Every vibe in the Tonada Library is original music, made for spaces like yours. You will not hear it on the radio or on a chart playlist. Choose the vibes that fit your room and schedule them through the day.
  • Go Bespoke. We make music for your brand alone. We start from who you are, what your space feels like and who walks through the door. Then we make vibes and tracks that exist only in your stores. They sit in the same Library, next to the catalog, so you run everything from one app.

Either way, the music stops being background filler. It becomes part of what makes your store yours.

Stop paying royalties on music that isn't yours

When a store plays commercial music, two groups of people have a right to be paid: the people who wrote the song, and the people who own the recording. Collecting societies gather that money for them. In Sweden that is STIM and SAMI. In the UK it is PPL PRS. In the US it is ASCAP, BMI and others.

So the cost of store music often has two parts. You pay the music service. Then you may also pay one or more collecting societies, on a fee that often grows with your floor space or the number of locations. Some services include part of this in their price. Many do not, and the rules change from country to country. It is easy to get wrong, and easy to pay twice.

Tonada works differently. We produce every track in our catalog outright. There is no outside songwriter, label or publisher behind the music, so there is no one else to pay. Your subscription covers the right to play it in your store. No collecting society fees for Tonada music, no licence paperwork, no worry about an inspector at the door.

The same is true for Bespoke music. We make it for you, we own it, and you play it under your Tonada plan.

One note: this covers the music Tonada plays. If you also play other music in your store, such as the radio or your own records, those rules still apply to that music.

Open question before publishing: confirm the royalty claims per market with legal (Sweden, UK, US), and confirm the society names we want to list.

Questions to ask before you choose

Take this list to any provider, Tonada included.

  1. Who owns the music, and what else must I pay to play it in my country?
  2. Is the music picked for a mood and a time of day, or is it a hits list?
  3. Will my store sound different from the store next door?
  4. Can I set a schedule once and leave it?
  5. Can each area of my store play its own music?
  6. Can I see what plays in every zone, and know fast when something stops?
  7. Can I run every location from one account, on my phone too?
  8. Can I get music made only for my brand when I am ready for it?

Pick the service that answers these for the store you run today, and grows with the stores you plan to open.
